2014 Reputation rankings UK

As the Times Higher Education Rankings editor puts it, “Reputation is the currency of global higher education today … accepted by scholars, students, donors and industry … The “brand” (and yes, it is a brand) on the degree certificates that students will carry for life is all-important”. So as 2014 draws to a close, we take a look at the reputations of UK universities during the year, extracted from the The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2014, and see which UK universities came out with the most gleaming of reputations.

Using an invite-only approach, the reputations of the world’s universities were appraised and graded by 60,000 highly experienced scholars from around the globe, each with an average of 18 years’ Higher Education teaching experience, in what was the largest ever invitation-only opinion survey by academics. Below we take a look at just the UK entries included in the world’s top 100.

Right at the top for the UK, and ranking at number 4 in the world, comes the University of Cambridge, followed immediately by Oxford University. So no surprises there and, switching briefly to a global point of view, it’s also no surprise to see that they were beaten by none other than Harvard (at #1), MIT (#2) and Stanford (#3). Going back to our UK-only focus, Imperial College comes next and then LSE, UCL and King’s College London at 4th, 5th and 6th places respectively for the UK. This is lovely to see as The Document Centre regularly supplies university thesis binding to students from all three uni’s during the course of the year — we count them amongst our most regular customers. Here’s the UK top ten, which includes even more:

  1. University of Cambridge (ranks at #4 in the world);
  2. University of Oxford (ranks at #5 in the world);
  3. Imperial College London (ranks at #13  in the world);
  4. London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) (ranks at #24 in the world);
  5. University College London (UCL) (ranks at #25 in the world);
  6. King’s College London (ranks at #43 in the world);
  7. University of Edinburgh (ranks at #46 in the world);
  8. University of Manchester (ranks at #55 in the world);
  9. London Business School (ranks at #93 in the world);
  10. London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (ranks at #94 in the world);

It’s great to see so many familiar customer names amongst the winners. The complete university World Reputation Rankings 2014 can be found here. It’ll be interesting to see what changes in 2015!
