Westminster

The Document Centre have recently been producing thesis binding for students from, amongst many others, the University of Westminster. So we thought we’d highlight a little about the university here on our blog. The University of Westminster is a teaching and research university and was originally Britain’s first polytechnic back in 1838 (then the ‘Royal Polytechnic Institution’), gaining university status in 1992. With a London W1 headquarters in Regent Street it also has three other W1 campuses, these being in New Cavendish Street, Wells Street and Little Titchfield Street as well as a NW1 campus at Marylebone Road plus a Middlesex campus at Harrow. Faculties include Architecture & the Built Environment, Media, Arts & Design, Science & Technology, Social Sciences & Humanities and its own Business School.

Today the university is home to around 22,000 students who benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, modern sports centres, inspirational galleries, open-to-the-public cafés and an unmatched heritage. As well as having been Britain’s first polytechnic, the Regent Street HQ campus can rightfully claim that it was the birthplace of British Cinema; it remains the home of Britain’s first ever cinema which was opened back in 1896 having been converted from a ‘Magic Lantern’ theatre which, from 1848, had been run by the then Polytechnic to demonstrate optical exhibitions. A major campaign is currently underway to restore the cinema to its former Victorian glory, partly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The same Regent Street building was also home to Europe’s first photographic studio, which was up on the roof and was visited by none other than Charles Dickens himself. More information about this fascinating university can be seen here.
