Goldsmiths masthead

During recent weeks we have supplied thesis binding to several Goldsmiths students, many of whom were studying for a PhD or MA. Having seen so many this month we thought we’d highlight a little about the college. Goldsmiths is officially known as ‘Goldsmiths, University of London’ as it is a self-contained college working under the umbrella of the University of London.  It is a public research university specialising in the Arts, Design, Humanities and Social Sciences. Goldsmiths describes itself as a ‘small but mighty’ campus with ‘a close-knit community’ and is based on a single campus in London’s New Cross area. It is known for nurturing individual talent and supporting students so they can grow both academically and personally.

Goldsmiths has a rich history with former students being recipients of 7 Turner Prize winners, Oscars, Mercury Music Prizes, Ivor Novello awards and BAFTAs. Goldsmiths alumni also include famous names who have had an unrivalled impact on UK popular culture. These include Malcolm McLaren, former Sex Pistols manager and musical artist in his own right, Steve McQueen the first black film director to win an Oscar for Best Picture, Damien Hirst, Britain’s “most successful artist” and Turner Prize-winner, Mary Quant the legendary fashion designer, Lucian Freud the artist genius, Kanya King MBE the founder of the MOBO Awards, several members of the Britpop band Blur, Alfred Hitchcock the legendary film director, Julian Clary the comedian and a whole host of other famous and influential people including, we note, a huge number of famous authors. Clearly the influence of Goldsmiths, particularly in the area of the Arts, is immense.

Many of the past and present tutors and academics at Goldsmiths are also legendary. They continue to carry out world-leading research and many of the books they have written are to be found on the reading lists of universities right across the globe.

Goldsmiths are ranked first in London for their high quality and helpful staff [1], have a very high student satisfaction ranking [2], rank at position 9 in the UK for their world-leading research [1] and are recognised as one of the UK’s top creative universities [3].

During August The Document Centre, based near London Bridge in South London, has produced quite a bit of bookbinding for Goldsmiths students who have used their online or drop-in thesis binding services. All thesis/dissertation binding is produced to the exact specifications demanded by the university and includes both hard and soft binding options as well as a host of optional extras like CD pockets and register ribbons etc.
