A hardcover, or hard bind (also known as hardbound, and sometimes as case-bound) book is one bound with rigid protective covers (typically of Binder's board or heavy paperboard covered with buckram or other cloth, heavy paper, or occasionally leather).
Hard Binds / Case bound books can use:
Perfect Binding is a widely used soft cover book binding method. With this binding, the pages and cover are glued together at the spine with a strong, yet flexible glue and stitched for extra support . They have a square, printed spine and the cover is made from a laminated cardstock that is heavier than the internal pages.
The order form is dynamic, and the options you see on a particular section of the form are determined by choices that you have made.
Changing your selections may increase or reduce the options available. Please feel free to amend your selections and change the options.
Hard Back / Hard Bind
Hard Back / Hard Bind- Typically, a 3mm thick grey board is cut for the front and back covers. The spine is measured and cut using Emblem grey board 461gsm. Covers overhang the book block by C.4mm on the top, bottom and fore-edge.
These covers are printed on 350gsm board. This is the perfect media and is similar stiffness to a post card / business card.Covers can be laminated with either a Matt Laminate (28 Mic) or a Gloss Laminate (27 Mic).Paperback books generally use a 7mm hinge as these are hand stab stitched and glued. The case is then creased 4 times to account for the spine and hinges that are required.

Up to 12 regularly spaced holes are punched along the binding edge of the printed sheets. A plastic strip incorporating identically spaced ‘tines’ is then inserted through the aligned holes so that they protrude through all of the pages to the other side, also then passing through another plastic strip which has identically spaced holes. A binding machine then clamps tightly down on the whole assembly so that the book is compacted together. The excess lengths of tine are cut off and heat melted at the same time to seal them to the 2nd plastic strip, so forming a secure binding.
Stab sewn A.K.A over-sewn binding is a type of bookbinding produced by sewing together loose leaves of paper to form a book block. Threads pass through small holes that have been drilled along the binding edge, forming overlock stitches. A piece of linen is then glued to the book block spine for further support. It is a very strong, durable binding technique.
Page count needs to be in blocks of 4 pages, blank pages can be added. A Section Sewn book, regardless of page count will be able to lay flat. Pages are printed and folded together into sections. Each section is then sewn into the following section along the spine. The spine is then glued together and a piece of linen is then glued to the spine for extra support.
We offer two types of lamination (matt or gloss) that is applied to the outer cover. Lamination is essential to both the binding process and the longevity of the item.
Gloss V’s Matt Lamination?
With the gloss, the shine finish gives the artwork a much more striking look, the light reflects off the cover, the solid colours have a richer depth.
With the matt, the colours are paler, slightly duller, but overall it has a look of high-class, a sophisticated feel that isn’t trying to grab attention by being ‘shiny’.
Please review the examples of the Mechanical Stitch cover artwork or Hand and Section Sewn cover artwork.
Once your book has been printed and the book block created, we will pass you your cover dimensions for your to create your artwork

Spine lettering is included in the price with every hard bind using fabric. Lettering is de-bossed on to the spine and /or cover of the book using metal blocks to form words, names etc.
The amount of characters, the size of the text can be limited by the size of the spine.
We have 3 standard type faces that can be selected along with a small selection of foil colours.
A combination of heat and pressure is used to transfer the foiled letters into the spine. Please upload a separate foiling guide – See example
Unlike traditional Foil Blocking, Digital Foiling doesn’t require the use blocks or plates – it’s printed directly from a file on the computer. Digitally Printed Foil results in a flat print product, without any texture or de-bossing.
An head band is a part of a book, most often found with hardcover bindings, that consists of a small strip of material affixed near the spine to provide a decorative effect.
We have a changing range of headband colours and if ordered, we will select the colour that matches the case colour closest
