Students from Birkbeck, University of London, have recently been keeping us very busy with thesis printing and binding work. Birkbeck is a world-class research and teaching institution and is unusual in that it’s an eveninguniversity. Even Birkbeck’s logo and arms feature a lamp and an owl to symbolise their motto, In nocte consilium, which translates as study by night. So students can spend their days at work, volunteering, studying or doing whatever they choose, then study at the university during the evening. Birkbeck is London’s only specialist provider of evening higher education.
“We give [students] the opportunity to achieve their ambitions by building their careers during the day, and studying in the evening alongside highly motivated students, many of whom have real-life professional skills and backgrounds”
Birkbeck’s main campus is in Torrington Square, Malet Street, right in the heart of London’s Bloomsbury. So it’s right there with big business, government buildings, a host of world-famous London museums and galleries while being only a stone’s throw from all the buzz of the West End.
In 2013 Birkbeck also opened a state-of-the-art new campus in Stratford, East London. Just like the Bloomsbury campus, it has excellent public transport links for easy access.
“We encourage applications from students without traditional qualifications, as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience.”
Fantastic! Where do we sign up!
Birkbeck allows a pace of study to suit each individual in many of its subjects — choose 3 years full-time, or part-time spread over 4 to 6 years. Either way, the final qualification is the same. With over 120 courses available, the choice is huge. Birkbeck teaches over 40 Certificates of Higher Education, six Foundation Degrees and nearly 80 BA/BSc/LLB degrees across the arts and humanities, sciences, social sciences, law and business. They also offer Graduate and Postgraduate Certificates/Diplomas and Master’s degrees. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings place Birkbeck in the top 1% of universities in the world and Birkbeck is consistently ranked number one in London for teaching and student satisfaction in the National Student Surveys.
Notable Birkbeck alumni include T. S. Eliot (poet), Bear Grylls (adventurer and TV presenter), Daisy Ridley (of Star Wars fame), Ramsay MacDonald (the UK’s first Labour Prime Minister), Sydney Webb (who, amongst other things, was co-founder of the London School of Economics & Political Science), Simon Bird (actor from The InBetweeners), many business leaders, authors, media presenters, MPs and Nobel Prize winners.
